Las Vegas Cabbies Have Their Way
Most of us have done this. When we visit a new city or tourist spot we often request
the cab driver to direct us to a good hotel or the city's hot spots. In many cities of the world the friendly cab driver helps the customer out as a gesture of hospitality or in return for a small tip from the customer.
But in Las Vegas the hotels and resorts for bringing in customers routinely pay the cabbies. This system of tipping often accounts for 50 percent of a cab driver's income.
Governor Guinn vetoed a recent bill approved by the legislature to curb this practice as part of the transportation bill, under pressure from the cab unions. The governor feels that the cabbies ought have a chance to air their views on the matter before this measure is introduced.
