150th-Anniversary Of Las Vegas Settlement
A hundred fifty years ago 30 men from Salt Lake City established Las Vegas Valley's first
permanent white settlement. They trekked for 35 days in the early of 1855 in really hot
conditions to start work on the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort.
Around 2,000 people gathered at the fort on Saturday to celebrate 150th anniversary of the event beneath a makeshift American flag like the one the settlers flew there in 1855.The flag was raised by people who were re-enacting the historic scene of the Meadows Missionaries. While the actors enacting the Soldiers of the Fort stood at attention in their period uniforms as the crowd sang the national anthem.
The $1.9 million visitors center at the site was also dedicated on the occasion. The area was a state historic park in 1990.
