Las Vegas Valley Faces Water Management Problems
Las Vegas real estate ownership means having an important stake in how
water management difficulties in the western United States play out.
Record drought conditions are being seen in the western states for the
sixth year in a row. And while this extended dry spell is a huge problem
to contend with, some locals are looking to the future with even more
concern. They worry that water troubles might persist even after the
drought is over. Water management is having to contend with big population
increases across the southwest, in addition to regulations imposed by the
federal government to protect endangered species. As a result, water
shortages may continue to be a common occurrence even after conditions
improve.
Employees at the Las Vegas Valley Water District are working to try to
change local residents' perceptions about water usage and being good
citizens. One outreach effort is putting millions of dollars toward paying
homeowners to renovate their property and adopt drought-resistant
landscaping strategies in favor of turf lawns, which require a lot of
water.
